1969 Sparkman and Stephens

In 1966 Chris Craft commissioned Sparkman & Stephens to design a series of sail boats for fi-glass production. Different sizes of the boats were given native American names and the 42’s were named Commanche’s. Only 24 were ever built, and Nakoni is hull number 11, launched November 1969. She sailed extensively on the East Coast of the USA and Caribbean. In the late 90’s she transited the Panama Canal and crossed the Pacific to NZ. The latter half of that voyage, from Marquesas to NZ was done single handed, after which the owner returned to the US for work. Nakoni languished in Whangarei town basin until 2002 when her current owner fell in love with her at first sight. They purchased her and relocated to Gulf Harbour for a two-year refit. Since then, they have cruised the Hauraki Gulf extensively and found Nakoni a lovely boat to sail. She is very well balanced and light on the helm. Forgiving and never rounds up even when hard pressed. The current owners have continued to maintain her and carry out improvements. These have included canvas work, sail stacker, new sailing instruments, auto pilot, Electroscan, new engine, new cooker, new RIB tender & outboard.
