For someone who loves the sea in New Zealand, winter is still a time to think about the ocean. Even though the days get shorter and the Winterless North sees a bit more rain, this season is a great chance to make sure your boat is ready to go when the warm spring days come back.
Spending time at the shipyards or taking care of maintenance now is what ensures relaxing days in the Bay of Islands or the Hauraki Gulf later.

The helmet and the fight against "Biofouling"
Even in cold climates, marine organisms can accumulate, and a dirty hull will affect fuel efficiency.
Careful check: make sure there aren’t any osmosis blisters in the fiberglass.
Marine coatings: now's the perfect moment to put on a new layer of advanced antifouling. Tackling this in winter means you can avoid the long shipyard waiting lists in October or November.
Shielding from dampness and mold indoors
The steady July rains up North and the cooler temperatures down South make a cozy spot for the sailor's sneaky foe: condensation and mold.
Active ventilation: if you keep the boat closed, try using passive or glass dehumidifiers.
Canvas and hardware: take a look at the canvas and cover work. If there are any open seams or loose snaps, they can let in fresh water, which can harm wood and upholstery much quicker than salt water.
Checking the Electrical System and Engine
Batteries really don’t like the cold! If your boat is going to be sitting in the marina or on its trailer for weeks without being used, it can wear out the electrical systems.
Charge maintainers: hook up a smart charger to keep your batteries in tip-top shape.
Fluid systems: be sure to give the engine a good flush (clean it with fresh water) and check the antifreeze levels if you're in places where the temperature can drop below 0°C.
Insurance and Safety Refresh before the season
Winter is a peaceful time to cozy up with a cup of coffee and take a look at the paperwork we often overlook during the summer. Is your policy current? Ensure that your vessel's value is properly evaluated for marine insurance coverage.
Survival gear: make sure to check the expiration dates on flares, look over the life jackets, and take a peek at the seacocks.
